From April 13, the first 4 units of 750 MW at Coca Codo Sinclair Hydroelectric Station, Ecuador start to formally generate power. The project was built by Sinohydro Group Ltd. of Power Construction Corporation of China as general contractor. The Station is Ecuador's largest hydroelectric project, which is also the largest hydroelectric station built by Chinese enterprise in Latin America. The contract is amounted to approximately US$2.3 billion, and the total duration is 66 months. The Export-Import Bank of China provided financing. The total installed capacity reaches 1500 MW, with a total of eight units. The Station is located in the east of Ecuador, 130 kilometers away from the capital Quito. A full operation of the Station will increase the electricity volume in Ecuador by one third. That will effectively improve the country’s energy shortage and weaken its reliance on purchasing power from foreign countries. As a result, the renewable energy accounts for more than 90%, and some power may also be exported to neighboring countries.

Vice President Glas attended the ceremony, and started the power generation button in person. Educator spoke highly of the Sinclair project, and believes the project will allow the country to realize self-dependence and self-sufficiency in the electricity supply, providing a guarantee with enough energy to accelerating the promotion of the industrialization in the country. Educator is grateful for the support from China in financing, technology and other aspects, and considers the project a good example in terms of social responsibility implementation, environmental protection and cultural integration. The local staff representatives expressed their gratitude in the speech as the Sinclair project brought about a large number of job positions that has made hundreds of families in the nearby communities escape poverty. The workers learned the technology, and thus improved the quality of labor. Sinclair project has played a positive role in pushing forward the cooperation between two countries in energy, improving the local development and benefiting local people.
