Against the backdrop of promoting the development of real economy advocated by the Chinese central government, the CCTV Financial Channel has delicately planed a campaign called “Endorsing China’s Entity Industry”, inviting 50 industry leaders from several representative birthplaces of China’s real industry to endorse China’s real industry, which is aimed at carrying forward the country’s affection for entity industry and consolidating people’s confidence in China’s entity industry.
Jiang Xipei, the founder, board chairman and party secretary of Far East Cable Co., Ltd., attended the TV program Dialogue as one of the selected industry leaders. He looked back on his initial desire for industry, told his story about setting up an industrial company and shared his industry spirit of infinite perseverance and attentiveness.

In 1980, 17-year-old Jiang Xipei, who failed to be admitted into a university, did not accept his family’s suggestion of having a second try and instead, he followed his second elderly brother to learn how to repair watches and clocks in Hangzhou. Before that, he had been pursuing his ambition of “studying hard for the rise of China”. After his failure in the college entrance exam, he did not get depressed and turned to make a fortune with handicraft like many elderly entrepreneurs. Before he left for Hangzhou, he set a small goal for himself- earning RMB 50,000, building a storied house and marrying a pretty and prudent wife.
Young Jiang Xipei was very hardworking and resilient then. To seek perfection, he sometimes worked hard for one to two months before he returned a repaired watch to his client while other watch repairers spent one or two days only. His love for his job pushed him to be even captious about details so that he could always be highly praised by the customers. His artisan attitude plus his honest and diligent personality attracted more and more customers. Thus, he realized his small goal before the deadline.
After repairing watches for five years, he not only married a beautiful wife, but also harvested the first pot of gold in his life, which consolidated his belief: only persistence is not enough for developing entity industry and you must also continuously pursue the better, make new breakthroughs and even be hard on yourself because the better you are, the harsher people will be. And the only thing you can do is study deeply, innovate, and achieve what others think is impossible. It was the artisan spirit of dealing with every detail to perfection that drove Jiang forward on the way of developing industry.
Affection for Industry and Craftsmanship Builds His Dream.
Time shapes an artisan heart and an artisan heart shapes the time.
Jiang Xipei set up a factory manufacturing watch and clock accessories with his first pot of gold, but he failed and lost all his money due to lack of key technology of clock production. After bankruptcy, he tried to look for another way of developing industry. At that moment, his first elderly brother working in a plastic wire factory showed him a way: producing wires.
Soon, Jiang began to sell electric wires in Anhui Province and Zhejiang Province with the RMB 100,000-odd he borrowed from his friends and relatives. Because of information asymmetry and a great market demand at that time, he obtained his second pot of gold soon. At the initial stage of China’s reform and opening up, there was a great potential for the domestic wire and cable market and wires and cables were closely connected with production and life. So Jiang decided to focus on the wire and cable industry. In 1985, he founded the Fandao Electrical Engineering and Plastics Factory, which latter developed into the Far East Holding Group. From then on, the company has been dedicated to developing the wire and cable industry, gradually growing into today’s Far East Cable Co., Ltd.
Far East’s First Civilian Wire Goes off the Line
Mr. Jiang has deep affection for industry. With affection, a man can be perseverant, resilient and fearless. Led by Mr. Jiang’s persistence in industry and firm commitment to artisan spirit, the previous Fandao Electrical Engineering and Plastics Factory gradually developed into the current Far East Holding Group, a company among the Chinese top 500 enterprises and the Asian top 500 enterprises, evaluated at RMB 35.268 billion.
Jiang’s story exemplified his faith in going forward and moreover his native stubbornness shared by all artisans. This is true of him both thirty years ago and now. Obviously, all his hard work has paid off.
Industry Gene Inherited From Generation To Generation
An artisan heart comes from insistence of leaders and inheritance of brand and gene.
Artisan spirit sounds simple: dedicated, consistent and always pursuing the better. However, it is so demanding to put what these simple words require into practice. You have to get used to solitude, resist temptation and overcome difficulties day after day for decades. Artisan spirit is needed by this era and should be inherited from generation to generation.
Born in the countryside, Jiang Xipei has the plain idea of family inheritance shared by peasants, an idea that has taken root in his heart. He often mentions “adequate family members and wealth" or “booming family and country”. But as an industrialist, what he intends to inherit is not only family line and property but also ambition and spirits. Due to the unconscious influence from their family and attentive education from their parents, the two sons of Jiang has both inherited his father’s industrial gene and artisan spirit and built their own career.
Jiang Chengzhi, the elderly son of Mr. Jiang, came back from overseas study in 2009 and served as an investment analyst for three years in the CITICPE. From 2012 on, he acted as board director and Secretary of the Board in the Far East Holding Group and led in acquisition of several subsidiary companies including Shuimuyuanhua, Aineng Electricity, Far East Foster, etc. He managed to expand the Group’s smart energy reach and industry chain layout with his outstanding capabilities. In August 2016, Jiang Chengzhi became Chairman of the Board of the Far East Smart Energy co., Ltd (Smart Energy for short; stock code: 6008690) and then led his company to move toward their strategic development goal of being “a world leading service provider of smart energy and smart city systems”. He perfectly interpreted and inherited the industrial gene and artisan spirit.
Life and career need carrying forward, so does artisan spirit. China's entity industry is taking on vigorous vitality thanks to the persistent and devoted inheritance and development of innumerable artisan industrialists.
Strong entity industry contributes to a strong country. It is not only the main focus of China’s macroeconomic policies in 2017, but also a major theme of the world economic development how to revitalize the entity economy.
